Mickey Guyton, BRELAND & Gladys Knight Provided Some Funky Soul

It’s not hard to notice that country music is a predominately white genre. For decades, Charley Pride and, later, Darius Rucker seemed to be the only people of color performing onstage. Luckily with musicians like Mickey Guyton, BRELAND, Blanco Brown and Kane Brown, times are changing.

Guyton and BRELAND took to the stage to perform their song “Cross Country,” which is likely one of the first country duets by two black artists. Guyton then brought Motown legend and “Empress of Soul” herself Gladys Knight to the stage where the three performed Knight’s 1970 hit, “Friendship Train.”

This performance added some much-needed diversity to the CMT stage, and we are all for it!
