Country sensation Luke Combs and bluegrass guitarist Billy Strings released new single “The Great Divide” on Monday (February 1). Combs, Strings, and Wyatt Durrette penned the new track, addressing the unfortunate cultural divide in the United States today.
“New song ‘The Great Divide’ with @BillyStrings out now. Wrote it with my buddies Billy and Wyatt Durrette in June of last year,” says Combs on Twitter. “It was originally intended to be on a bluegrass album that I was working on, but that has been put on pause for now, and album 3 is up next.”

“The Great Divide” was initially written and recorded for his out of the ordinary bluegrass album. However, the artist felt the need to put the passion project out on the back burner and only release the moving track because of the hard-hitting and timely message that went along with it.
“I thought now was a good time to put this song out with everything that has been and is going on in the world,” Combs shared with his fans on social media. “It isn’t meant to be political or try and tell you what to think or believe; that’s not my job.”
While listening to the new single, you will notice that Combs took a unique approach while recording. Unlike the mainstream country he has produced in the past, expect to hear a new sound from the country artist. The sudden pivot in music will include an abundance of traditional bluegrass instruments such as the mandolin, five-string banjo, and a classical acoustic guitar.
“We’re all so far, so far apart now/ it’s a deep as it is wide/ We’re about to fall apart now if we can’t reach the other side/ We gotta find a way across the great divide,” he and Strings sing in the chorus.
“The Great Divide” is one of many tracks calling for “unity within the nation” produced this year, as Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard just debuted their hit new single “Undivided” at the Celebrating America Inauguration Concert on January 20, 2021.
