Mickey Guyton is no ordinary country singer and songwriter. She is a powerful black female artist, who uses her platform to advocate for equal representation within country music, when it comes to gender and race equality. In fact, Guyton is making history at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, as she is the first-ever solo black artist to be nominated in a country category for her track “Black Like Me.”
“I was just surprised that I got nominated, and then later did I see all the articles about the historical moment of it,” says Guyton during a Good Morning America interview in January. “It just, again brought me to tears all over again.”
Her song, “Black Like Me,” shines a light on the racial injustice we are seeing in America today. Through the heartfelt and moving lyrics, Guyton shares her perspective on discrimination and her personal experiences.
“I hope this song inspires women, period – doesn’t matter what color you are – to live your truth,” she adds to her statement on GMA, as she also noted that the country music scene often pigeonholes female singers and songwriters or stereotypes them.
The influential trailblazer will be one of many voices performing at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
