The powerful and raw track was penned by Sam, Mary Gauthier, Jamiee Harris and produced by Tommy Cecil. Along with the guitar-driven instrumentals, the musician showcases his ear-pleasing vocals and heart-wrenching message. The emotional track begins with the line – “I think momma’s drinkin’ again,” highlighting the vicious cycle of alcoholism and the effects it could have on yourself, but others as well.
“It’s truthful…The song’s mostly about not lying to the ones you love and not creating negative patterns,” says Williams during an American Songwriter interview. “It’s also kind of about realization and understanding yourself well enough to know that they’re certain things you don’t need to do and certain things you have a responsibility to do.”
It’s no secret that the narrative is full of distress, bravery, and even a dash of hopefulness, which is brought to life in his new music video, which dropped on February 1.The music video was directed by Running Bear Films’ Stephen Kinigopoulos and Alex King. The talented directors have been the masterminds and creative forces behind the camera for several of our favorite country artists and their music productions, such as Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town, and Chrissy Metz. Now, the team created magic for Sam Williams, and it is quite chilling.
The video was shot in Henry County, TN, on Williams’ family farm. Throughout the short film, you will see and feel the pain that comes along with lying to someone you love. Kinigopoulos and King captures the rocky relationship between a mother and son, as William (the son) is seen sprawled out in a middle of a cornfield on a naked mattress, coming to the realization that his mother turned back to alcohol.
While the internal battle continues, the country artist is displayed saturated in water as he shares that he has prayed for his mother’s happiness, health, and recovery. Even when she lies to him about her sobriety. This video is a prime example that actions speak louder than words, and you can’t fool your loved ones.
“I sing about family drama that we all experience and grapple with,” Sam shares on YouTube.” One thing that will never serve you well is lying to someone you love. That can only lead to turmoil. ‘Can’t Fool Your Own Blood’ is about being a pattern breaker and taking control of your own fate. Being at war with oneself is the greatest battle.”
The country artist comes from a long line of music icons, as he is the son of Hank Williams Jr. and the grandson of Hank Williams, which are both included in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
