Country artist William Michael Morgan came across a huge milestone in 2016 as his single “I Met A Girl” gave him his first number one. To celebrate, ASCAP had a #1 party at South in Nashville, Tennessee!

Co-written by hit songwriters Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally and Trevor Rosen, the tune marked the 1st number one for Morgan, the 7th chart-topper for MCA songwriter/recording artist Hunt, the 25th for prolific writer/producer McAnally, and the 6th for Rosen, who is a songwriter/artist member of the band Old Dominion.

We had the opportunity to sit in and interview Morgan along with co-writers on “I Met A Girl,” Shane McAnally and Trevor Rosen of Old Dominion. Sam Hunt also penned the song, however, he was unable to attend. McAnally and Rosen are some of the best songwriters in country music, so it is no shock that they were involved with this #1!

Since the release of Morgan‘s new album Vinyl, the singer/songwriter has had a lot of success and has been doing many things. William is currently on tour with Lee Brice and Justin Moore, and he is loving it! In the media session before the party, he talked about how he is learning so much from his seasoned tour-mates from how to interact with fans, to how to work an audience, and even how to treat a team.

In addition, William Michael Morgan explained as he has aged with this song, it has constantly been developing new meanings for him. He fell in love with “I Met A Girl” from the second he first heard it, but he thinks it will always be a relevant song for all generations.

“‘I Met A Girl’ was actually on Sam Hunt’s acoustic mixed tape before I recorded it,” Morgan said. “That’s the version that I heard when Universal played it for me and I just fell in love with it. As cliché as that sounds, it’s really the only thing that I can say because it’s so true, I just fell in love with it; it was one of those songs I couldn’t stop listening to.”

Morgan also revealed that the song has made an even more meaningful impact on his life than when he first heard it, now that he has a beautiful baby daughter, and is engaged to Jennifer Wayne of Runaway June.

“I think the song does have a whole new meaning now,” the singer said. “When I cut it, I was just cutting a great song that I fell in love with and nowit takes on a different meaning with the birth of my little girl, which happened first; to meeting my beautiful fiancé and getting engaged. I think all that plays a part and makes me think about the song a little differently when I perform it.”

Congrats on your first number one, William Michael Morgan!
