Ever since Little Big Town released their heart-wrenching new single “The Daughters” last month, we have been obsessed with the message it conveys. Written by Karen Fairchild, Sean McConnell, and Ashley Ray, the country tune shows the true and unfortunate standards that girls are held to, yet empowers them to embrace who they are.

“[The Daughters] is for the little girls out there to believe in themselves. They don’t have to listen to time old traditions. They can do anything they want to in life and believe in themselves and the world is theirs,” the band told us backstage at the 2019 iHeartCountry Festival in Austin last month.

“We hope that their generation grows up not having inequality. It’s a deep song but also easy for us all to relate to. I have a little boy and I just want him to grow up in a world where we don’t judge each other on race or gender or religion and we are just kind to each other and take care of each other,” band member Karen Fairchild adds.

“The Daughters” officially begins the story and is the genesis of Nightfall, the band’s ninth studio album that is coming later this year.
