The inspiring tune gives fans the grit to stay strong in the face of a relationship struggle known too well by many listeners. Carter shares with Celeb Secrets Country in an exclusive interview what prompted her to pen this track.
“Essentially one of my best friends had been dating a guy who just flipped a switch and started acting really aloof and distant,” said Carter. “I think most people have been in a situation like that. It was almost like he was trying to be distant so she would be the one who had the hard choice to make. They aren’t together anymore, and she’s still wonderful, so it all worked out the way it should have!”
The Vancouver born, Nashville based songstress is no stranger to captivating audiences with her music. Carter released her debut self-titled EP in 2016. The five song album was quick to make its mark in the country music industry, as Carter then found herself opening for national acts that year! Carter was quickly in cahoots with major performers, opening for artists such as The Band Perry, Kira Isabella, George Canyon, Brett Kissel, Chase Rice and more.
In the same year, Carter won the illustrious SiriusXM Emerging Artist Showcase Competition at the Boots and Hearts Music Festival. Not only noticed by thousands of fans, but my Universal Music Canada, Carter then signed her first label offer. Underneath this label, Carter released her debut single “Bless My Heart.” This project was then succeeded as an independent artist by her Merry Christmas To You EP (2018),“Santa Baby” (2020) “Heart of a Woman” (2020), and “Broke Your Own” (2020).
Having such success, we were keen to know what has been the biggest lesson throughout her career journey.
“To stand up for myself,” said Carter. “I think it’s really easy to listen to a million different opinions, everyone has one! It took me a long time to realise okay… trust your gut, you know yourself, and if you don’t fight for yourself and what you want, no one else will.”
This valuable lesson is one that Carter has pushed through to fans in her latest track. When asked what message she wants fans to receive when they listen to “Yours To Lose,” the answer was clear for the uplifting songstress.
“Stick up for yourself! This song is all about being confident. If someone isn’t appreciating you for you… move along.”
And while some may find it hard to “move along” at first, we can attest it is certainly easy to move this song to your playlist on repeat!

Celeb Secrets Country: What first inspired you to pursue music?
Vanessa Marie Carter: “I wish I could remember the first time I realised I wanted to pursue music…the truth is, I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t top of mind for me! I started dancing when I was really little, and started singing shortly after that. My family is full of musicians, so I guess I grew up around it.”
CSC: You have had such a successful journey as an artist! What has been the most surreal moment in your career thus far?
VMC: “Thank you!! It’s been quite a journey so far. I think winning the Boots & Hearts emerging artist showcase in 2016 was pretty surreal on a large scale. Every day little things happen and I think.. man I’m lucky to do something I love everyday! Just being able to live in Nashville and surround myself with artists who I admire still feels surreal sometimes.”
CSC: What has been the biggest lesson throughout your career journey?
VMC: “To stand up for myself. I think it’s really easy to listen to a million different opinions, everyone has one! It took me a long time to realise okay… trust your gut, you know yourself, and if you don’t fight for yourself and what you want, no one else will.”
CSC: On the new track, you share that you wrote “Yours To Lose” when one of your best girlfriends was going through a weird patch with her boyfriend. Can you tell us more about that?
VMC: “Essentially one of my best friends had been dating a guy who just flipped a switch and started acting really aloof and distant. I think most people have been in a situation like that. It was almost like he was trying to be distant so she would be the one who had the hard choice to make. They aren’t together anymore, and she’s still wonderful, so it all worked out the way it should have!”
CSC: What artists inspire you and did any inspire elements of “Yours To Lose”?
VMC: “I think I’m really inspired by artists like Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris experimenting with pop elements in their recent releases. For a long time I thought I had to fit into this little ‘bubble’ of country music. I think it’s refreshing to see that you can be yourself and try new things, and that can be hugely successful!”
CSC: How is “Yours To Lose” different from any other music you have released?
VMC: “It’s a little more on the pop side, similar to my last release. I just try to write things that are really relatable, while still being catchy and something I’d want to listen to.”
CSC: What message do you want fans to receive when they listen to “Yours To Lose”?
VMC: “Stick up for yourself! This song is all about being confident. If someone isn’t appreciating you for you… move along.”
CSC: Can fans anticipate a music video for this song?
VMC: “I’m still on the fence with this! But it would be really fun to do!”
CSC: If you were to direct a music video for “Yours To Lose” what would you envision for it?
VMC: “A really badass confident woman who knows what she’s got to offer… just telling it like it is!”
CSC: Beyond “Yours To Lose” do you have plans to release more music this year? If so, what can fans anticipate?
VMC: “Absolutely!! There’s so much more coming and I can’t wait to share it! Fans can expect more music that is true to me. I love writing from experience, whether it’s my own or a friends. I think that’s a great way for fans to get to know me.”
CSC: Since we’re Celeb Secrets, can you share any behind the scenes secrets from making the song that we wouldn’t know when listening to it?
VMC: “This recording process was an interesting one! All the players were in masks (socially distancing obviously). So it’s pretty special that even though it was such a different process, everyone came together and made a really special project come to life! I’ll always remember that.”
