The High Plains Drifters are getting in the holiday spirit with the release of their new Christmas single “Santa! Bring My Girlfriend Back!” and we’ve already added it to the top of our seasonal playlists this month.
Produced by Greg Cohen (Robin Thicke, Nile Rodgers), “Santa! Bring My Girlfriend Back!” is inspired by a boozy and drama-filled Christmas dinner, the track features an array of instrumentation marrying traditional and contemporary sounds including upbeat marimbas, acoustic guitar chords, and horns reminiscent of everyone’s favorite holiday classics. Its lyric video, which dropped earlier today, is a playful animated visual that tells the story of a distraught man who seeks solace in drink after having his girlfriend stolen by Santa Claus.
“I cannot think of a better time to release this song than this year. Yeah, it has been a crappy year for the whole world, but at Christmas, perhaps more so than at any other time, the people of the world are going to want things to feel NORMAL again,” shared the band’s frontrunner Larry Studnicky. “They’ll want to have smiles on their faces and to enjoy some old-fashioned Christmas cheer. We hope this song will help them do that.”
And it absolutely does. Known for breaking boundaries when it comes to their sound, The High Plain Drifters can be described as the melting pot that the genre of Americana has been waiting for.
“Santa! Bring My Girlfriend Back!” is the band’s first release after dropping their self-titled debut album, which Studnicky told CS Country last April that can “resemble taking a road-trip across America, perhaps starting at one coast and ending at the other — but leaving the station on your FM dial in the same place for the whole trip.” The holiday tune is also a taste of what’s to come from the band in 2021, which is a brand-new studio album.
