Sister Hazel started 2018 with a band by releasing their new EP Water and it’s absolutely outstanding!
Band members Mark, Drew, Ken, Ryan, and Jett worked super hard on this seven track extended play and we can’t get enough of it.
One the standout songs off Water has to be the touching “You Won’t See Me Again.” Co-written by band member Andrew Copeland, the artist sings of the heartbreak and distress his brother-in-law’s fight with alcohol addiction brought him. Overall, the songwriting on Water is very personal, which gives you a deeper look inside Sister Hazel’s lives.
CS Country caught up with Sister Hazel recently to talk about the new EP, how it differs from previous music they’ve released, and what song is the most meaningful to them. They also reveal details on their upcoming cruise as well as secrets you may not have known about them!

Celeb Secrets Country: Off Water, what is the most meaningful song and why?
Ryan Newell: “To me, “You Won’t See Me Again” is the most powerful and emotional song on the EP. Andrew Copeland co-wrote the song about his brother in law’s alcohol addiction. I think the music and the lyrics really compliment each other perfectly. The song speaks to me and I love the twist at the end. It’s inspiring.”
Celeb Secrets Country: What makes this EP different from previous music you have released?
Ryan Newell: “I think people are always going to hear the Sister Hazel sound on all of our releases. We try to pick songs that might fill an area that hasn’t been filled, but you can always tell it’s us. We used horns and backup singers for the first time on the song “Shelter.” That was new sonic ground for us. I feel we are always maturing, in a good way, musically and in our songwriting.”
Celeb Secrets Country: How would you describe your sound off Water for someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
Ryan Newell: “It sounds like Sister Hazel when we are truly inspired and let the songs rule our musical decisions. We have lots of harmonies and creative arrangements on this EP. We worked really hard to make the guitar tones sound warm and full on this release as well.”
Celeb Secrets Country: Our favorite song off it is “Roll On Bye,” can you tell us more about why you chose this song to be a part of your EP?
Ryan Newell: “We have been playing that song live for years. It was on our live album, 20 stages, but we never captured it in the studio until now. Our fans really loved the song when we would play it and they would always ask why we don’t have a studio version. It’s fun to play and it fit perfect with this group songs.”
Celeb Secrets Country: You are going to play Tortuga this spring — how excited are you for that?!
Ryan Newell: “Yes! This will be our second time playing the festival. It’s always an honor to play with such an impressive lineup of artists. The crowds are huge and super supportive. It’s a rockstar moment for sure!”
Celeb Secrets Country: What do you think is special about your live shows?
Ryan Newell: “I feel that you get to see a band that puts a lot of time, passion, and huge amounts of effort into their craft. That being said, we still are fun to watch. Our personalities shine through and you feel at home at our shows. We have a lot of musical improvisation as well. I think this keeps the show fresh and keeps people guessing on what will happen next.”
Celeb Secrets Country: What can we expect to see from you in the second half of 2018?
Ryan Newell: “We are hosting our annual cruise, The Rock Boat, later this month. We are going to continue recording in the studio. We plan to release four EPs in the next two years. We are always touring and playing our many side events. Our charity, Lyrics for Life, is gearing up for another benefit and our fan getaway, Hazelnut Hang, is set for early June.”
Celeb Secrets Country: Since we are Celeb Secrets Country, do you have any secrets or fun facts about yourselves or one another that you would like to share with us?
Ryan Newell: “Mark is a Star Wars freak. Drew is really emotional and tears up at sad tv shows. Ken used to be in a Heavy Metal band. Jett can sing the Gilligan’s Island theme song in German. I am Batman….shhh…don’t tell anyone.”
